The Physics Department of this College was established in the year 2008 as a part of the two year Physics Pass Course for Mathematics Honours students as well as students opting for the three year Physics Pass Course under Burdwan University. The department has been an integral part of the College since then. The upgradation to include Physics Honours course, with student intake strength of 25, was in the 2017-18 academic session. This occurred simultaneously while the College shifting its affiliation to the newly established Bankura University. Initially, the Physics Honours course was started as a self-financed course, But keeping in mind the financial constraints of the students in the economically underdeveloped catchment area of the College, comprising mostly of south-west Bankura, we reduced the tuition fees substantially in the 2019-20 session & ultimately dispensed with the self-finance structure in the session 2020-21. Until 2015, classes were taken by Guest teachers from neighbouring schools in the Morning shift. The first full-time teacher in a substantive post joined at the end of the 2014-15 session after which the classes shifted to the Day shift. The laboratory simultaneously started developing from a rudimentary stage to a fully operational Physics Pass laboratory by the next year.
Since 2017, with the introduction of the Honours course, we have developed the lab incrementally with the limited financial resources available. The RUSA 2.0 grant has enabled us with acquiring almost all equipments required for the Honours course and all the text and reference books in sufficient numbers for our Library. At present, there are three labs situated in the ground floor of the Vidyasagar Bhavan of the College. The department was further bolstered by the recruitment of a second full-time teacher in the academic year 2019-20.
Sine 2016, every year on average a single student has completed the three year Pass course, two of whom have been employed as teachers in government aided Primary Schools in Khatra sub-division. Currently, there are on average three Honours student in each year of course. The first Honours student of the department is scheduled to pass out in the current 2020-21 session. With the advent of a second teacher and a fully operational lab we hope that more students will take admission in this department.
